Why do we choose to breed Golden Retrievers

PictureSamson's coming home picture
This is the beginning of our story, the day we brought our first Golden Retriever home, little did we know how much he would change our world. Samson was friendly and so smart. Our first vet visit was very pleasant as we were told that our new puppy was not only robust and healthy but also a fine representation of the breed.  With endless games of "get the ball" and our usual evening walk, he soon stole our heart. The only problem was that there was one of him and three of us, so we decided to expand our family to include another. What we didn't fully realize is that we had gotten very lucky when we found Sam's breeder. She was helpful and willing to answer all our questions, she knew the breed very well. The puppies were clean and well cared for and when we entered the whelping room they ran to her with tails wagging. I will always be thankful for this experience.

Finding our next puppy was much more difficult. We ran through numerous websites before we finally found a breeder that was like our first. When I finally found one that I thought would be great, they required that I buy specific vitamins and food as part of the health or buying contract. Although I may make recommendations, I will never force a new puppy family to buy something that I get a cut of profit from because that is never what we wanted. Our goal is to give each family the experience of bringing home that one dog that you will forever compare every other pet to. I strive to go beyond, “glad I found you” I want “this golden has enriched my life.” This is why we called ourselves cherished goldens.

A little about us: I have been an Oncology/hospice nurse for 20 years. My medical background also includes both critical care skills as well as long term care where my dogs have been utilized as pet therapy.  My husband’s family bred exceptional Scotties for the extent of his childhood and teen years. So, we combined our skills and spent a couple years seeking the advice of many gracious mentors. In the end, we hope our breeding program will not only strengthen the breed but also bring about happy dog/family relationships.

To answer the question at hand, why do we breed Golden Retrievers? I often found that during therapy sessions my dogs filled a void that was really needed. As a nurse, I understand that the healing process goes far beyond just medicine alone.  I love taking the dogs to the park but it upsets me to see the skittish golden or one that is having trouble getting around because his health is questionable, or they didn’t look at all like the breed should. It didn’t feel like it was enough to just look at my dogs and be thankful. If we could assist in furthering the breed by using genetics to help lessen the possible flaws the breed can display and couple that with heightened socialization during those ever so important first weeks, I feel It is a great start. I have always felt that the best thing one can do is serve the ones that you are called to serve.
With all of that said, don’t be surprised when I ask about your lifestyle and expectations, because I am trying to match you with the perfect puppy. I spend a great deal of time with each one and as their little personalities develop, after years of experience, can tell which puppy is great for an active family or a different one to become a service dog. Our breeding program isn’t big and I will only let each of our girls have one litter every other year. These are my personal therapy dogs and I regard them as family.
